Lecture 1: Paediatric dentistry today

To give a comprehensive insight into modern paediatric dentistry, the challenges that we still face and clues towards the future.

Lecture 2

To provide an overview of dental anxiety and behaviour management problems in children attending the dentist, including prevalence and management.

Learning objectives

Lecture 1

  • be familiar with modern approaches to cariology, especially in the primary dentistion and how biological approaches can be used to help solve the commonest disease of childhood in the world today, namely Early Childhood Caries
  • gain an insight into child management and how the dental team can support child safeguarding in the UK today.

Lecture 2

  • Be aware of the prevalence of high levels of dental anxiety, and behaviour management problems in children and young people attending for dental treatment
  • Have been introduced to the issue of assessment and a limited range of assessment tools for dental anxiety and behaviour management problems in children and young people
  • Have a knowledge of a range of non-pharmacological behaviour management approaches for children and young people attending dental treatment.

Lecture 1

Marie-Therese Hosey will outline the modern approaches to managing high caries risk children, including some safe-guarding issues.

Lecture 2

Tim Newton will look at dental anxiety and behaviour management problems in children: a psychological approach.
