AimTo recognise and manage peri and postoperative complications encountered in dento-alveolar surgery.
Learning objectives
  • To gain knowledge of the aspects of surgery where complications can occur and therefore reduce risk and incidence of complications
  • To improve the quality of the consent process
  • To identify risk factors that may lead to common and more serious oral surgery complications which will aid informing and consenting patients appropriately
  • To understand the management of complications such as post-operative bleeding, oral antral communications, displaced roots into the maxillary antrum/lingual plate and nerve injuries
  • To recognise clinical indications and risk factors of when to appropriately refer cases to secondary care.
Learning content

The presentation will include a review of some interesting cases and learning outcomes to illustrate the key risk management principles.

We ask that you bring any relevant (anonymised) case noted/radiographs from your own practice for a case based discussion session.

Ms Nathwani is on the specialist list for Oral Surgery and works across London and the South East England in both NHS and private practice. She graduated from Kings College London Dental Institute in 2009 and undertook roles in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in London and the surrounding counties. She completed her Specialist Training at Luton and Dunstable NHS Trust before commencing a Consultant post at Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust.

Naomi graduated from Kings College London in 2009, she completed an Oral Surgery Specialist Training and DClinDent in Oral Surgery at Edinburgh Dental Institute. Naomi was recently appointed as an Oral Surgery Consultant at East Surrey Hospital and a Locum Consultant at Eastman Dental Institute. She is also an IMOS provider, delivering oral surgery in primary care and a tutor for the Diploma in Primary Care Oral Surgery and an MFDS examiner.
