Aims

To help the GDP recognise and refer on appropriately intra-oral Potentially Malignant Oral Lesions (PMOL).

Learning objectives
  • To recognise features of intra-oral lesions that may be of clinical concern
  • To understand the importance of histopathology for these conditions/lesions
  • To understand the importance of clinico-pathological correlation in managing these patients.

Dr Adair is a Consultant in Oral Medicine at the Royal Victoria School of Dentistry in Belfast. Having qualified in Dentistry in 2000 (BDS Dundee) and undertaken training posts in Scotland and Northern Ireland he attained dual qualification in Medicine 2008 (MBChB Dundee). Following posts in hospital and dental practice he was clinical lead for a final year (5BDS) Dental Outreach Centre in Arbroath. Dr Adair entered formal Specialist Training at Liverpool University Dental Hospital (2014) gaining ISFE and CCST in Oral Medicine February 2018.

Dr Séamus Napier graduated in dentistry from The Queen’s University in Belfast in 1986 and achieved a FFD from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1990, FRCPath by examination in 1993 and PhD in 2000. He was appointed as a consultant pathologist in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust in Belfast in 1999 where he specialises in oral/maxillofacial and head and neck pathology and is an honorary lecturer in the School of Dentistry. Dr Napier has also co-written the 2016 'Tissue Pathways for Head and Neck Pathology' guidance document for the Royal College of Pathologists, UK.
