  • To improve the management of the growing numbers of patients with periodontal disease by giving guidance for screening, diagnosis and management of periodontal disease.
Learning objectives
  • Recognise the importance of screening, diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and the legal and ethical duties of care
  • Understand the new 2017 classification of periodontal diseases and conditions and how to implement it into practice using the British Society of Periodontology's implementation plan and the HGDM toolkit.
  • Identify your role as clinicians within periodontal disease
  • Discuss the challenges of managing periodontal disease working under the NHS contract
  • Interpret the Healthy Gums DO Matter toolkit for managing periodontal disease working under the NHS contract
  • Recognise the importance of effective communication and behaviour change
  • Review how to assess patient engagement
  • Discuss record keeping with periodontal disease and how to protect yourself from medico legal problems
  • Consider and plan how the toolkit can be implemented within your own practice.
Learning content

The ‘Healthy Gums Do Matter’ programme is designed to support dental teams to effectively manage growing numbers of patients with periodontal concerns in daily practice. This course will give you guidance and tools on screening, diagnosis and management of this disease through the user friendly toolkit which has been recently updated in 2019.

Shazad Saleem BDS, MFDS RCS(Eng), MDPH (MRes) General Dental Pr

Shazad Saleem graduated from St Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2002. Having completed his vocational training and a year as an SHO in Maxillofacial Surgery, he returned to General Dental Practice where he completed his MFDS examination. He now operates four dental practices in the North West of England with three other partners, delivering NHS dental care in some of the most deprived areas in the North West. He has been involved in a number of projects including the original service redesign pilot in Oldham and Salford. He is currently Chair of the Perio Subgroup for Greater Manchester LDN and has been leading the development of implementing an evidence-based care pathway approach for managing Periodontal Disease into NHS Dental practice called Health Gums DO Matter. He has recently completed a Masters in Research (MDPH (MRes)) at the University of Manchester as a part of an In-Practice Fellowship training award from the NIHR, looking into abbreviated oral plaque and bleeding scores which were developed as a part of the Healthy Gums DO Matter toolkit. He also delivers a training programme on how to implement Health Gums DO Matter into practice with Primary Care Commissioning (PCC). His current work includes working on the Medical Histories DO Matter project for Greater Manchester LDN.
