Developing your orthodontics: the good, the bad and the ugly!

This meeting is dedicated to the memory of Chris Kettler MBE, following his recent sudden and unexpected passing.

Chris was a renowned Bedford Orthodontist, a BDA member and former teacher at The Eastman, awarded an MBE for services to Orthodontics in the Queen's birthday honours in 2011. Please come along and support your Section and share any memories of Chris and The Great Ouse Orthodontic Study Group which he founded and ran for many years.

  • To provide an overview of orthodontic need, benefits and risks
  • To develop an insight into the complexity of extraction cases
  • To become more aware of the risks and problems with inter proximal reduction.
Learning objectives
  • ​To recognise common pitfalls and understand the basics including IOTN
  • To become more familiar with some of the multitude of appliance systems now available
  • To appreciate orthodontic treatment planning and possibilities with IPR and extractions. 
Learning content

An overview by specialist orthodontists, to introduce the increasing multitude of orthodontic appliances available, and explain the rationale, benefits and risks behind ‘moving teeth’. To cover basics in general dental practice, avoiding missing the obvious – and consideration for the increasing adult population who desire orthodontic treatment.

Helen Turner

Helen qualified with Hons from Birmingham Dental School in 1993. She started her three year full time specialist training at Guys Dental School, London in 1997. She has worked at Bedford Specialist Orthodontic Practice since 2000 and took over as Principal in 2011. Helen is a member of the British Orthodontic Society, the British Dental Association and the European Orthodontic Society and represents the Bedfordshire Orthodontists on the Local Dental Committee. Her special interest is in adult orthodontics.



John Evans 

John undertook his dental training in Bristol, qualifying in 1984. He gained a broad range of experience in the Community Dental Service, in general practice and in a hospital setting before deciding to specialise in orthodontics. John undertook his orthodontic training at Guys Hospital in London and completed his specialist training in 1993.

In addition to establishing his orthodontic practice, John worked as a Clinical Supervisor at the Eastman Dental Hospital, London, training its postgraduate students.
