​​​​AimsThis lecture aims to examine how practitioners can best treat those with persistent orofacial pain, how they communicate and deliver this treatment effectively and ensure the best outcome for the patient.
Learning objectives
  • Attendees will gain a better understanding of effective patient communication
  • Attendees will understand the options for management of ongoing dental pain issues.
Learning contentDr Canavan will be speaking about how practitioners deal with unexpected patient responses to treatment, including in the form of persistent pain. Causes, treatment and clinical case studies will be explored to inform the practitioner about how best to manage this complex issue.

Dr Dermot Canavan

Dr Canavan graduated from Dublin Dental University Hospital in 1980. He is currently a part-time lecturer in orofacial pain management at the Dublin Dental University Hospital. He teaches orofacial pain management courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is also involved in continuing education programmes for practicing dentists. He is an Honorary Clinical Fellow at the Orofacial Pain Clinic in King’s College Dental School in London.

Tristen Kelso, Director, BDA Northern Ireland, will be speaking on ‘BDA: me and my Trade Union’. He will be exploring BDA’s role as a Trade Union and the importance of this role for members. He will explore the BDA’s role in the wider healthcare context as well as looking at ways the BDA can engage and support members in their careers.
