IRMER Update and the role of DCPs in dental radiography    

Session synopsis

Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 (IRMER) impose significant requirements for patient protection. This session aims to bring you up to date with legislation concerning dental radiography and ensure you are aware of statutory responsibilities, particularly around the role of DCPs in dental radiography.

Lecture filmed at the British Dental Conference and Exhibition 2016.

  • Recognise the biological effects and dangers of x-ray radiation
  • Advise the relevant rules and regulations that apply to radiography in dental practice
  • Consider the importance of justification, optimisation, and quality control programmes in ensuring radiation safety
  • Understand the roles of DCPs in dental radiography.

About the speaker

Bev Littlemore - photo.jpg

Bev Littlemore, Lecturer in Dental Hygiene and Therapy, University of Central Lancashire

Bev has worked in dentistry for over 25 years in general practice, maxillo-facial and orthodontic settings and in Public Health. She is passionate about furthering the development of Dental Care Professionals and returned to University to gain her Combined Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy, graduating with Distinction in 2008 from Liverpool University. Bev has since achieved a BSc (Hons) in Dental Studies (1st class) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management. She is currently studying for her PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. As Dental Hygiene and Therapy Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and part of the BDS teaching team, Bev has been fundamental to the development of UCLan's new BSc (Hons) in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy and is module lead for several modules on the course, in addition to her current teaching commitments on the BDS course.
