Safeguarding children and young people: topical topics

Session synopsis

Safeguarding and promoting children and young people's welfare involves taking action to ensure that all children have the best life chances. Dental professionals must be able to recognise signs of child abuse and neglect and to know how and where to refer when concerned. In addition to reviewing these essential topics and outlining our key role in managing dental neglect, this presentation will inform you about some of the wider issues that put children at risk. Parental substance abuse, sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation have all hit the headlines in recent years, but what does the dental team need to remember in order to be ready to help a young person in our care? And how can we keep up-to-date in an ever-changing world?

Lecture filmed at the British Dental Conference and Exhibition 2017
