Oral cancer – detection, referral and dento-legal risks associated with diagnosis

Saman Warnakulasuriya will discuss the signs and symptoms of the early stages of oral cancer, enabling participants to carry out a thorough clinical examination on patients and be able to understand the criteria for urgent referral.

Len D'Cruz will help you to understand the dento-legal risks associated with oral cancer diagnosis.

Saman Warnakulasuriya OBE

Emeritus Professor of Oral Medicine and Experimental Pathology, King’s College London

Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya is the Emeritus Professor of Oral Medicine and Experimental Pathology at King’s College London and was the Chairman of the Oral Medicine Division at King’s College Hospital and at Guy’s Hospital, London from 2005 -2015.

Saman has made major contributions in cancer epidemiology, oral medicine and clinical trials. He is a leading expert on human carcinogens, especially tobacco, alcohol and areca nut that cause mouth cancer.His early work showed that smokeless tobacco and areca nut cause cancers of the mouth and have led International Agency on Research on Cancer to confirm these substances as Class 1 carcinogens and to re-affirm an Europe-wide ban on smokeless tobacco use.

Professor Warnakulasuriya has also been involved in developing the terminology and classification of oral potentially malignant disorders and studied their natural history and molecular changes during progression to malignancy.He received the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine and Pathology in 2014 and has made substantial contributions to the world literature with Google Scholar citations 22817; H Index 76 and i10 index 229. 

He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty The Queen in 2008 for his services to medicine and was elected a Fellow of King's College London in 2019.

Senior Dento-legal Advisor, BDA

Len is a general dental practitioner, running a seven-surgery mixed NHS and private practice in North East London. He is an experienced vocational trainer for the London Deanery.

He is Senior Dento-legal Advisor for BDA Indemnity and lead lecturer for the MA in Dental Law and Ethics at the University of Bedfordshire. He is the author of two books and writes and lectures widely on dento-legal aspects of dentistry.
