Aim

To have an improved appreciation of what types of "lesion" make GDPs and doctors worry most. Learning from that, this presentation will also provide guidance to help you interpret clinical and radiographic findings in order to improve the accuracy of your red flag referrals.

 

Learning objectives

By the end of this presentation you should:

  • Improve your understanding of what triggers dentists and doctors to make red flag referrals
  • Find out more about the rarity and natural history of potentially malignant oral lesions
  • Be able to confidently differentiate the more common lesions of concern and appropriately arrange for their referral.

About the speaker

​Professor John Marley

Consultant Oral Surgeon, Queens University of Belfast School of Dentistry, Northern Ireland

John is a Consultant in Oral Surgery at the Queen's University of Belfast School of Dentistry. He is passionate about Quality Improvement in Health and is Institute of Health Improvement certified.

He was past Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI (2017-2020).  He was previously Head of Teaching at Queens University Belfast, School of Dentistry (2003-2006). He currently examines in and was previously Chair of the Board of Examiners in the Tricollegiate Examination in Oral Surgery for the UK (2015-2017), as well as NI Training Programme Director for Oral Surgery (2009-2020).

He was a non-executive Director of the Northern Ireland Medical & Dental Training Agency (2005-2012).
