Professor of Periodontology and Evidence-Informed Healthcare, UCL Eastman Dental Institute

Ian is Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Evidence-Informed Healthcare at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and Honorary Consultant in Periodontology with UCLH. He is a clinical specialist in periodontics at UCL and in specialist practice at PerioLondon. He also leads the Centre for Oral Health and Performance ( which has been awarded recognition by the International Olympic Committee as a research centre in collaboration with the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Ian is an Editor with Cochrane Oral Health and a member of the editorial board of Evidence-Based Dentistry Journal. His research has been awarded prizes by the European Federation of Periodontology, Royal Society of Medicine, German Periodontal Society, German Cochrane Centre and International Association for Dental Research.

Ian was nominated as an inspiring teacher at UCL in 2007 and received the UCL Provost's Award for Leadership in Public Engagement in 2017. Ian was a member of the International Olympic Committee, Scientific Committee for the 2014 Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Monaco.

Reader/Honorary Consultant in Periodontology, University of Birmingham

Since his appointment as a Clinical Lecturer in Periodontology in 1999, Mike has strived to develop skills in both teaching and research. He is Quality Assurance & Enhancement lead for the School of Dentistry and deputy lead for the College of Medical & Dental Sciences, Head of Periodontology Specialty Teaching, Library Academic Lead and Collaborative Programme Officer for the School of Hygiene & Therapy. He also represents the College of MDS on the University Collaborative Programme Committee.

Mike is a calibrated clinical examiner for a number of multi-national companies and is a key member of the clinical trials team based in Periodontology at The School of Dentistry. Mike is committed to continuing research aimed at elucidating the mechanisms underpinning the aetiology of periodontitis. He is also a founding member of the Photonics Research Group which aims to develop light based technologies for the management of a variety of diseases.

Mike's external professional activities include membership of the British Society of Periodontology, where he sits on the Education Committee, which has developed a range of activities aimed at improving the knowledge and management of periodontitis within the dental community and increasing patient awareness of periodontal disease. He is also Treasurer of this prestigious society.
