    Lecture;
    Tackling violence: evidence-based alternatives to "a tooth for a tooth"

    • Learn about the new approach to violence prevention which has its origins from maxillofacial surgical practice

    • Discover new legislation and guidance you have to adhere to as a result of this model and how effective it can be.

    Starting with a brief history of violence affecting three generations of the Shepherd dental family, the lecturer will describe an entirely new approach to violence prevention which has its genesis in his maxillofacial surgical practice. Known as the Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention this new strategy came about as a result of a major discovery in the lecturer's PhD research. Based on information collected in accident and emergency departments this method has been widely adopted across the UK and overseas. It has also resulted in new legislation and professional guidance across public services.

    Emeritus Professor, Crime and Security Research Institute, Cardiff University

    Emeritus Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Professor at Cardiff University's Crime & Security Research Institute which he co-founded in 2015.

    While a Registrar in Oxford held a Research Fellowship in the Nuffield Department of Surgery. And on completion of Specialist Training spent time in Nigeria with further research in the association of Epstein Barr virus with ameloblastoma.

    The PhD "Assault: characteristics of injured and injuries" was prompted by the increase in community violence observed during the 1980s Yorkshire miners' strike. This eventually led to the establishment in 1996 of the Cardiff Violence Research Group; with the aim "through practical research on violence, leading academics, working in collaboration with external partners and organizations, help to understand, monitor and alleviate the causes of violent behaviour"
