What to expect

A lecture-based session with opportunity to ask questions to the speakers, incorporating case studies and how you can learn from past circumstances. 

Justin Durham and Tara Renton will provide an update on managing oral pain and modern oral surgery procedures that can be carried out in general dental practice. The renowned speakers will also give you an opportunity to further your knowledge and skills by providing guidance on when to treat and when to refer.

Tara and Justin will demonstrate how to diagnose acute and chronic orofacial pain and how to best manage this.

Learning objectives

  • To be familiar with techniques to prevent and manage acute pain
  • To manage painful neuropathies
  • To manage chronic trigeminal pain and understanding when to refer complex patients
  • To understand the differential diagnosis of chronic orofacial pain
  • To be aware of how to diagnose and construct an initial treatment plan for TMD suitable for primary care.

Meet the speakers

Justin Durham is a Professor of Orofacial Pain at Newcastle University's School of Dental Sciences and an Honorary Consultant Oral Surgeon at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne’s Hospitals’ NHS Foundation Trust.

His primary research interests are in orofacial pain both at the first and second translational research gaps. He has wide experience in a variety of methodologies involved in health services research and has received international awards both for clinical and pedagogical research. He established and leads a tertiary referral multidisciplinary clinical service for orofacial pain in the North of England based at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne’s Hospitals’ NHS Foundation Trust.

He is currently the British Dental Association’s Chief Scientific Advisor.

Tara Renton completed her dentistry at Guys, Oral and Maxillofacial surgical training in Melbourne, undertook a PhD in Trigeminal Nerve injury at KCL and senior lectureship at QMUL. Over the past 10 years at KCL, Tara has developed education programmes such as an academic oral surgery training programme as well as the first orofacial pain Masters programme starting in 2017. She has established an international leading programme of trigeminal nerve injury and orofacial pain research publishing over 150 peer reviewed articles and grants.

Tara has set up two patient facing websites trigeminalnerve.org.uk, advising both patients and clinicians in preventing and managing iatrogenic nerve injury in relation to dentistry and orofacialpain.co.uk for patients with chronic trigeminal pain.

Tara is on the Dental Update Editorial Board, she has co-edited the BDA clinical manuals for Oral Surgery Books I and II, editor of Warman OFP book and editor of ‘The Art of LA’ with Andrew Mason. Tara is an elected member of the RCS England FDS Board, the RCS Eng National advisor for Oral Surgery, member of the Oral Surgery SAC and Dental Senate. She represents dentistry on the National Surgical Safety Board, she is London South CLRN lead and she is President of the British Association of Oral Surgeons.
