What to expect

This full day event with multiple speakers will include presentations on oral medicine and the older patient, an understanding on oral cancer and what early signs to recognise and a look at the symptoms and how to avoid burnout.

  • Overview of orofacial and oral mucosal conditions commonly encountered with older patients
  • Describe the epidemiology of oral cancer and identify key risk factors and recognise red flag signs and symptoms
  • Recognise signs and symptoms of burnout and describe the consequences of burnout and develop a range of workplace and individual strategies to avoid burnout.

09:30 Management of common oral conditions in the elderly - Conor O'Gorman and Amanda Willis

Aims:

  • To enhance delegates understanding of the key oral medicine considerations in older adults.

Learning objectives:

  • Overview of orofacial and oral mucosal conditions commonly encountered with older patients
  • Recognise how systemic diseases and medications frequently encountered in older patients impact the head and neck region
  • Examine, diagnose, manage and refer to oral medicine services where appropriate.

11:00 Oral cancer - Amanda Willis

Aims:

  • To provide an understanding of oral cancer, enabling early recognition and timely referral of patients with suspicious oral lesions.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe the epidemiology of oral cancer and identify key risk factors
  • Recognise red flag signs and symptoms
  • Understanding of the role of special investigations in confirming diagnosis of oral cancer
  • Demonstrate knowledge of when and how to refer patients with suspected oral cancer.
