Understanding the changes to the NHS contract (England)

Shiv qualified in 1985 from Newcastle Dental School. He is a GDP and has been a provider and owner of several NHS practices in the North-East. He has been the GDPC representative for Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland since 1996 and was elected Chair of GDPC in February this year, having also served as Vice-Chair. Shiv is also employed as an Associate Clinical Lecturer, a Clinical Dental Adviser, and a Postgraduate Dental Tutor within Health Education England. He obtained a Bachelor of Law degree (LLB Hons) in 1995 and was awarded an MBE in the Queens Honours List in 2009 for services to NHS dentistry locally.

Tom is the BDA's Head of Policy and Research, leading the team that engages with NHS leaders and the DHSC on pay, terms, conditions and contracts. He has worked at the BDA for eight years and over that time has worked on a range of issues including contract reform, pay, young dentists and dental students.

Since graduating from University of Leeds, Joe has been a GDP in Wakefield. In partnership with his wife Catherine, Joe developed his business from a two-surgery squat to a nine chair practice delivering NHS general dental care and orthodontics. Joe is particularly interested in seeking reform to the dental contract having participated in the Pilots and Prototypes 2013-2017. Joe is Vice Chair of GDPC as well as Chair of Wakefield Local Dental Committee. Until recently, he chaired the Yorkshire Council of LDCs. Joe is also Secretary and Treasurer of the BDA’s Yorkshire Branch.

Vijay has worked in general dental practice for over 30 years, all of that time in the NHS, as an associate to begin with and then as a practice owner for 25 years.  Working in the NHS, Vijay is fully aware of the daily problems faced by his colleagues who cannot, or choose not to, deliver private care to suppsort their practices.  He has been actively involved with his Local Dental Committee practically all his professional life. On GDPC, he will always make strong representation for colleagues, based on his experience, involvement and knowledge. He has been GDPC Vice Chair since 2019
