What to expect

This event will examine the links between periodontitis, general health, and dental implant outcomes and how these relationships influence treatment planning in general practice.

17:00  Three-course dinner (included for all attendees)

Learning objectives

  • Study evidence for link between periodontitis and general health
  • Equip practitioners to discuss the link between periodontal and general health with patients and medical colleagues
  • Explore factors and provide a framework for deciding whether to retain or extract periodontally affected teeth
  • Examine implant challenges in advanced periodontitis and how tooth loss timing impacts treatment feasibility.

Meet the speakers

Louise O’Dowd Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Periodontology, Edinburgh Dental Institute
David Offord Specialist in Oral Surgery and Practice Principal, Vermilion - The Smile Experts

Louise O’Dowd is a Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Periodontology. She works at Edinburgh Dental Institute (EDI) as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. She is Professional Lead for the Department of Restorative Dentistry; Clinical Lead for the Undergraduate Therapy programme and teaches on the Postgraduate Prosthodontic and Endodontic DClinDent programmes. In addition, Dr O'Dowd is a Periodontist at Vermilion - The Smile Experts in Edinburgh, where she treats patients with periodontal diseases on referral. 

David Offord is a Specialist in Oral Surgery and Practice Principal at Vermilion - The Smile Experts. Dr Offord heads up a team of 15 prosthodontists, periodontists, endodontists, oral surgeons, hygienists and orthodontists who work collaboratively to treat patients referred privately often with complex dental needs.  He places around 900 implants a year. Dr Offord has been at the forefront of treatment planning for patients with periodontal disease who need dental implants for the past 14 years.
