What to expect

This lecture aims to enhance understanding of the links between periodontal and systemic health, explore their biological and nutritional connections, and highlight the personal, social and economic impacts of disease. It will equip general dentists with practical, evidence-based guidance, supported by national and international resources, to deliver holistic patient care.

Learning objectives

Discuss the biological mechanisms for the association between periodontitis and systemic diseases
Discuss the relationship between periodontitis and vitamin deficiencies
Revisit periodontal treatment guidelines when caring for patients with associated systemic diseases

Meet the speaker

Ana Gambôa Consultant Senior Lecturer in Periodontology, University of Bristol

Ana Gambôa

Since 2019, Dr Ana Gambôa has held the position of Consultant Senior Lecturer in Periodontology at the University of Bristol and Bristol Dental Hospital. She is the lead for the Managed Clinical Network (MCN) in Periodontology for the South West of England and plays a pivotal role in postgraduate and undergraduate education as the co-lead and founder of the MSc in Periodontology and subject lead for undergraduate teaching in the discipline.

Clinically, Dr Gambôa maintains a busy practice. In addition to training restorative and mono-specialty trainees at Bristol Dental Hospital, she works as a specialist periodontist in two private clinics, delivering advanced periodontal care.

Dr Gambôa graduated from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 1997. She went on to serve for four years in the Periodontics Department of the Brazilian Navy, during which she also participated in three humanitarian missions to the Amazon, providing dental care to riverside communities.

In 2002, she moved to the UK and completed an MSc in Dental Public Health and a PhD in Oral Epidemiology at Queen Mary University of London, where her doctoral research focused on the association between psychological stress and periodontal disease.

Her academic career includes positions at the University of Liverpool as a Clinical Lecturer and later a return to Queen Mary University of London, where she led the MSc in Dental Public Health. In 2014, Dr Gambôa was awarded a prestigious Academic Clinical Lecturer (ACL) position funded by the NIHR, allowing her to combine complex multidisciplinary periodontal care with clinical research. She obtained Membership in Periodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, cementing her status as a recognized specialist in the field.
