09:30 Mini masterclass in dental CBCT interpretation with Suk Ng, Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology

Aims

In this session, the speaker aims to update dentists on anatomy seen in conventional dental radiographs and to train them to understand anatomy seen in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Dentists will learn, using anonymized cases, how to manipulate CBCT scans and to write structured radiology reports.

Learning objectives

• Recognise the anatomical structures in a dental CBCT scan
• Learn how to orientate a scan correctly
• Describe how to scroll through a scan in axial, coronal, sagittal planes
• Discuss how to adjust images for best viewing parameters (brightness, contrast, histogram)
• Learn how to rotate images-Discuss how to upright a tooth.

Learning content

Participants will gain understanding of anatomical structures in 3D, learn how to assess signs of abnormality and write reports.

To explore the clinical and challenge of managing restoratively compromised teeth with a guarded prognosis, focusing on decision-making frameworks that balance biological, mechanical, and patient-centred factors in restorative dentistry.

• Recognise key indicators of structural and restorative viability
• Apply patient-centred treatment planning

Through case-based discussion, this interactive lecture will go through decision making on when to try save teeth, restorative materials/techniques to improve prognosis of our treatment and how we as clinicians can make informed and ethical decisions in real-life clinical practice.
