ONLINE WEBINAR

What to expect

Plaque‑biofilm driven diseases continue to place a major clinical and economic burden on dentistry, yet they remain largely preventable. This webinar, delivered by Iain Chapple and Avijit Banerjee will examine the scale of the current caries and periodontal disease problem, the real cost of intervention compared with prevention, and the impact of gingivitis on tooth loss and systemic health. We will review key aspects of the S3‑level clinical guideline, highlight the limitations of contemporary caries management, and argue that effective prevention—supported by behaviour change from both clinicians and patients—remains the missing link in everyday dental practice.

Learning objectives

  • Appreciate the economic and societal burden of periodontitis
  • Understand the health-economic benefits of shifting our focus to prevention
  • Appreciate that gingivitis has systemic as well as local oral consequences
  • Appreciate the economic and societal burden of caries
  • Understand the concept of contemporary caries management and the issues
  • Be aware of the need for adjunctive agents to mechanical plaque control for some patients
  • Be aware that behaviour change is challenging for clinicians as well as our patients
