What to expect

This presentation will examine alternative amalgam materials, reviewing the contemporary literature on their clinical performance.

The lecture will focus on:

  • The context of dental amalgam’s use and the reduction of its use
  • Discussing the alternatives to amalgam, where and when each type can be used, eg. resin composite bulk fill materials, and self-adhesive bulk fill composites
  • Learning about Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) and its variants.

  • Be aware of why dental amalgam’s days are numbered
  • Understand the most recent developments in bulk fill resin composite materials, including self-adhesive variants, for loadbearing situations in posterior teeth
  • Explore the clinical performance of new GIC materials in loadbearing situations in posterior teeth.

Meet the speaker

Trevor Burke Emeritus Professor and Specialist in Restorative Dentistry

Trevor graduated at Queens University Belfast, and following appointments there, he worked in general dental practice in Manchester for 21 years, also working part time in the Dept. of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manchester. He was awarded a Chair in Glasgow in 1996, moving to become Professor of Primary Dental Care at the University of Birmingham and Hon. Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in 2000, becoming part-time in 2014, before becoming Emeritus Professor in October 2020. Trevor is (co-) author of 380 papers published in peer-reviewed journals and has been awarded over 70 research grants. As well as research, writing and medicolegal work, Trevor’s main responsibility has been as Editorial Director of the journal Dental Update, before taking a more background role in April 2024.

Parking
On street car parking
Parking bays are located on St Vincent Street, Blythswood Street and Douglas Street which surround the building. Parking is chargeable Monday – Sunday by using the meter or Ringo app. Blue badge holders can park in bays free of charge.

Multi-storey car parks
Q-Park Waterloo Street is the closest multi-storey car park to the College (2 minute drive or 3 minute walk). Further information available on Q-Park website
