West Yorkshire Section: Trauma ready? Handling dental trauma with confidence

Since graduating from University of Leeds, Joe has been a GDP in Wakefield. In partnership with his wife Catherine, Joe developed his business from a two-surgery squat to a nine chair practice delivering NHS general dental care and orthodontics.

Joe is particularly interested in seeking reform to the dental contract having participated in the Pilots and Prototypes 2013-2017.

Joe is Vice Chair of GDPC as well as Chair of Wakefield Local Dental Committee. Until recently, he chaired the Yorkshire Council of LDCs. Joe is also Secretary and Treasurer of the BDA’s Yorkshire Branch.

Katherine has worked as a Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Leeds since May 2025.  Prior to this she worked in Leeds Dental Institute as a Consultant and led the dental trauma service.  Katherine continues to supervise a dental trauma clinic on a weekly basis and enjoys providing treatment to this patient group.  Katherine is responsible for the teaching of dental trauma to postgraduate students in Paediatric Dentistry at University of Leeds.  Katherine has lectured across Yorkshire on dental trauma to various staff groups including consultants, specialty trainees, Level 2 dentists and general dental practitioners. 

John qualified in 1980 from Leeds School of Dentistry and worked, until 2022, as a GDP in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, with a special interest in orthodontics.  For eight years, John was the senior national dental adviser to the Care Quality Commission, a role he held until March 2023. John was elected by his peers to serve two terms as chair of Dental Practice Committee (2009-2015). During this time, John played a leading role in driving contract reform, first as a member of the NHS Next Stage Review, and then for 11 years (2010-2021) as a member of the National Steering Group for Dental Contract Reform.

Alyn qualified from Leeds Dental Institute in 1995. After a number of years in general dental practice he undertook postgraduate training in Endodontics at the Eastman Dental Institute and he was awarded an MSc with Distinction in 2009. He was admitted to the GDC Specialist List in Endodontics in 2013.

He was previously the Deputy Director of Endodontic CPD at the Eastman and is currently a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow and Head of Endodontic teaching at Leeds Dental Institute. He is President-elect of the British Endodontic Society.

Alyn has undertaken well over 100 hands on teaching days for General Dental Practitioners, as well as regularly speaking at national and international conferences. He has had numerous articles published in the dental press and wrote the chapter on Managing Endodontic Emergencies in the British Endodontic Society Guidelines to Good Endodontic Practice.
