09:00 Management of oral cancer

Malcolm Cameron

Learning content

  • Appreciate the risk factors for developing oral cancer
  • Understand who can get mouth cancer
  • Learn how to spot suspicious lesions prompting referral
  • Understand guidance as to what should be referred.

Aim
Understand the process of managing patients with mouth cancer from diagnosis through to follow up.

  • Review presentation of mouth cancers
  • Revise the diagnostic process
  • Look at how management decisions are made
  • Appreciate the treatments involved
  • Reflect on how such a diagnosis influences care of patients in dental practice.

11:00 Safeguarding update for the whole dental team

Learning content

This session will explore safeguarding responsibilities in dental and primary care, including recognising abuse across all ages, using Essex pathways to escalate concerns, understanding professional duties, and working with partners to protect patients and support safer practice.

Aims

To strengthen understanding of all-age safeguarding responsibilities within the Essex health and care system. The training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns, understand local pathways and escalation processes, and work effectively with partners across the Essex system in line with statutory duties.

Learning objective

To recognise safeguarding concerns, understand local Essex pathways, and take appropriate action in line with statutory duties and multi-agency processes.

14:00 Medical emergencies in the dental practice

Nick Barker

Learning content

  • Correctly recognise a medical emergency situation
  • Prioritise treatments of casualties
  • Carry out the above emergency measures as required by the situation.

Aim

Understand the need to use the ABCDE approach to identify acutely sick patients.

Learning objectives

  • Consider teamwork and emergency planning
  • Recognise situations in which cardio-pulmonary resuscitation is required
  • Describe how to perform CPR to the latest Resuscitation Council (UK) standards
  • Describe the importance of debriefing after emergencies
  • Explain the need for and the importance of history taking, to determine those patients who are at risk, and when to take measure to reduce that risk
  • Explain the need for updating medical and drug histories
  • List the contents of the emergency drug box and minimal levels of equipment required.

15:00 Infection control

  • Describe the latest recommendations for dental cross infection control
  • Identify the infectious diseases we most commonly encounter in dental practice and the risks they pose
  • Demonstrate the successful application of HTM 01-05 in our everyday professional activities.

Aims

This session will explore current dental cross infection control issues – from the perspective of the whole team. The session will explore the dangers we all face and the guidance we should follow to reduce the risk and ensure our continuing professional compliance. This session aims to keep you safe from harm and the CQC.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the cross-infection hazards in General Dental Practice
  • Describe the individuals at risk and techniques to reduce the risk to these individuals
  • Demonstrate the use of HTM 01-05 in their practice.

16:00 Communication - the good, the bad or have we misunderstood each other?

Learning content

Looking at areas where failures in communication by any members of the team can lead to concerns being raised and how to prevent them.

Aims

To look at situations which present themselves in general dental practice where failures or misunderstandings in communication arise leading to patient complaints or claims. To strategies for prevention and how to address incidents which occur.

Learning objectives

  • Identify risk area
  • Understand how team working can reduce errors occurring
  • Strategies for implementing good protocols
  • Responding to concerns
  • Learning from misunderstandings or failure in communication.
