Change in lead employer arrangements for VDPs

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is making good progress in transferring Vocational Dental Practitioners (VDPs) to NES as the lead employer for trainees rather than individual dental practices.

The change in lead employer arrangements aims to provide a centralised and coordinated approach to various HR functions to benefit trainees.

This change for VDPs follows the successful transfer of Core and Specialty dental trainees to NES as lead employer last September. Due to the nature of the VDP contract, the current transfer requires Ministerial approval and is subject to wider Scottish Parliament scrutiny which is now under way. The transfer is planned to take place in August.

We are represented on the NES Doctors and Dentists in Training Dental Subgroup which meets regularly to discuss the lead employer project, and our Scottish Dental Practice Committee have commented on draft consultations and communications to training practices.
