We offer a huge congratulations to Roz who has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours list 2025.
A retired consultant orthodontist, Roz has been a long-serving representative of the BDA and active at a local and national level.
During her career, she was the president of the BDA and the Northern Ireland Branch, former chair of the NI Council for the BDA, and until recently, worked with the association in matters relating to wellness and mental health. Roz is also currently honorary patron of the British Orthodontic Society, and she has been chair of the BDA Honours and Awards committee since 2020. Roz was appointed consultant orthodontist in the Western Health & Social Care Trust Altnagelvin, Tyrone County and Erne (later South West Acute Hospitals) in 1991. She had an interest in the treatment of children born with cleft lip and palate and established a cleft nurse liaison service to support the children and their families.
After personally experiencing the loss of dental colleagues to suicide, she decided to undergo training in stress awareness, suicide prevention and mental health first aid. Roz then set up a group focusing on stress in dentistry across the profession, which aims to raise the issues in the dental workplace and to provide safe, confidential signposting to professional help.
It is fair to say the BDA would not be the same place without Roz, and this award is so well deserved. Congratulations Roz!
Roz said: “I was honoured to receive this award and I accept it on behalf of those who are making a difference in our profession. I feel humbled and spurred on to continue supporting colleagues ensure a healthy work/life balance and to have positive and rewarding careers. No dentist or team member should have to face the difficult times alone, it is so important we are there for each other.”
BDA member and London GDP Linda Greenwall, has also been appointed a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her longstanding charitable work in community dentistry. Linda founded the Dental Wellness Trust in 2011, alongside her work in her long-established practice and involvement in dental education.
