Newly elected Chair Sarah Canavan made a call for associates to take a stronger voice in dental politics at the latest General Dental Practice Committee (GDPC) Associates Sub-committee meeting.
Sarah said: “Without associates, there wouldn’t be a GDS, so our role is essential in ensuring NHS dentistry continues for the patients who need it. We need to have a strong voice, and we need associates from across the UK and those working in all sectors to get involved.”
The GDPC Sub-committee represents the interests and concerns of those working in associate roles across the UK. Their discussions feed into the GDPC’s agenda and include issues such as pay and conditions, career pathways and training, as well as support and advice for associates.
GDPC Chair Shiv Pabary gave an update on the state of play in discussions over further changes to the UDA contract and fundamental contract reform. The Sub-committee felt it was essential associates are well-briefed on these issues, and feed into the discussions.
There was a wide-ranging discussion on the contractual issues being faced by associates, including a need for a more robust appraisal process to ensure career progression and that pay uplifts are being fairly implemented.
It was felt there is a lack of understanding of the rights and freedoms associates have under their self-employed status. The group also said that the BDA has lots of information and advice on associates self employment status that people can access, and this is a strong benefit of becoming a member.
