Sugar Awareness Week 2025: Time to cut through the sweet talk

Learn about key findings and proposals on sugar in an informative webinar, and help raise public awareness.

We are backing Action on Salt and Sugar’s Sugar Awareness Week, running from Monday 17 to Sunday 23 November - and it could not come at a more critical time.

The statistics are alarming, latest figures show nine in ten children and four in five adults are exceeding their recommended daily sugar limits, increasing the risk of lifelong health issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and tooth decay.  

This year’s theme “Cut through the sweet talk: what you see is not what you eat” shines a spotlight on misleading marketing. From ‘natural energy’ to ‘smart snacking,’ health claims on packaging often mask the truth: many products are not nearly as healthy as they seem.

Our chair Eddie Crouch says “Every spoonful of sugar fuels tooth decay - a preventable epidemic costing billions and damaging lives. It is time for governments to hold the food industry accountable. Public health should never be optional.”

Busting the ‘health halo’

Buzzwords like ‘high fibre’ or ‘low fat’ might make consumers think they are making healthy choices. However, this can distract from sky-high sugar content, making it harder for people to make informed choices. There are two easy ways that you can take part in Sugar Awareness Week and help us bust this ‘health halo’.

Sign up to the Association of UK Dietitians’ free webinar on sugar. Topics include key findings from Action on Salt and Sugar’s recent survey, as well as the latest policies to reduce sugar intake in the UK, and the impact of sugar on oral health and diet.

The webinar is on Monday 24 November 12:00 – 13:00, featuring Peter Dyer, Chair of our Central Committee for Hospital Dental Services, alongside Kawther Hashem, Head of Research and Impact at Action on Sugar, and a speaker from the Association of UK Dietitians.
