The most recent event of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Dentistry and Oral Health focused on the topic of oral cancers, raising awareness of risk factors and inviting MPs to get their mouths checked by a dentist.

New figures from Cancer Research UK show that cases of oral cancer – including cancers of the mouth, tongue, lips, tonsils and throat – have been rising dramatically for both men and women over the last decade.

The event, organised by the BDA in conjunction with Cancer Research UK and HPV Action to mark Mouth Cancer Action Month aimed to highlight the shocking increase in mouth cancers, the vital role that dentists play in detecting them early, and the need to vaccinate boys against the HPV virus.

Dentists know that early diagnosis is absolutely vital to better outcomes for patients, and that is why the BDA has worked with Cancer Research UK to develop at toolkit for dentists to help identify and refer cases of oral cancer.

Dentist and BDA member Dr Jayesh Patel offered free mouth checks to MPs and Lords on the day, helping to highlight the essential work dentists do to fight this disease.

Over twenty Parliamentarians from across the UK attended the event to learn about this devastating disease and what can be done to help prevent it.

They had the opportunity to speak to oral and orophrangeal cancer survivors about their experiences, and we highlighted the message that they should encourage constituents to visit the dentist regularly, to make sure any suspicious changes in the mouth are spotted early.

Organising events such as this is part of our lobbying activities to get policymakers and the Government to listen to the concerns of our members, and ensure we can provide better care for patients. If you'd like to know more about our campaigning work, please do get in touch.
