My name is Amaar, and I'm a representative for the Young Dentist Committee. I'm currently a DCT2 at Dumfries and Galloway Hospital.
We've been hearing that some young dentists have issues with the dental foundation training (DFT) assessment process, and this is something we feel that needs further investigation.
Part of our work on the Young Dentist Committee (YDC) is to identify areas of work where we can improve things for young dentists and students.
My background and interests lie in dental education and academia, and I have identified the DFT recruitment process as a gap for current research and publications.
DFT recruitment – your views needed
Currently, we feel there is very little – in fact next to no – official feedback or research available for the whole assessment process, and so I have created a survey to find out people's opinion on the assessment day.
This survey gives individuals who have been involved in the assessment for national recruitment DFT to provide feedback - with the aim of evaluating their satisfaction levels with the DFT national recruitment assessment.
What will I do with the findings?
The findings from the survey will help me to gather evidence and highlight any areas that need improvement to the relevant stakeholders.
Please be assured that your data is secure – there is an option at the end of the survey to put your year of graduation and University (as this will help us see if there are patterns across the UK), but you do not have to fill this in if you would prefer not to.
The future of dentistry
With the increasing demands of dentistry, there is a chance now for young dentists to get involved and help leader and enable change the profession in what is a tough time for many young dentists.
I've done this by becoming more involved with the BDA on the YDC and by writing articles, to help share my experiences and to seek others' opinions.
Following the launch of the review of dental training by Health Education England earlier this year, the YDC is keeping a close eye on its progress and their plans for any changes, ensuring the voice of younger dentists are being represented in the discussions.

Improving working lives for younger dentists
We support dentists in at all stages of their careers and our Young Dentists Committee and GDPC Associates Group aim to be the voice of those starting out in dentistry and those mid-career.
They work on a range of issues, including pay and conditions, education and training, career pathways, the impact of dental regulation and stress in the profession, and dental health and science issues.
