I am very busy these days. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I love helping children to feel better about losing a tooth. I whisk away the (often pretty gross) old tooth in the middle of the night and replace it with something small to help them feel better. That’s been my job since forever and I like to think I’m quite good at it, but these days there are a lot of teeth that need taking care of and a lot of young children that I am trying to help.
More than 170 children are going into hospitals to get teeth extracted every day in England. That’s a lot of kids and a lot of teeth! It can be quite hard to get past security in these hospitals, so I am not always able to sneak in and help cheer them up. Many kids are losing quite a lot of their teeth just because they don’t know how to keep them healthy. I’m run off my feet!
Tooth decay is the main reason for children being admitted to hospital admission, so it would be a big help if you could avoid tooth decay. Do you think you could:
- Avoid fizzy and sugary drinks: I know you like juice and squash, but it can be high in sugar, so maybe you could drink it only with meals or switch to water?
- Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste: Make sure to brush your teeth twice a day, before bed and another time during the day.
- Go to the dentist regularly: They’re really helpful and can help you and your teeth stay heathy!
Your baby teeth matter, so please do take care of them – you’ll be healthier and it’ll really help with my workload!
Best wishes,
