Are you interested in developing your writing skills and getting your work into dental publications? Then the British Dental Editors and Writers Forum (BDEWF) is for you.

It provides support for dental editors and writers and encourages quality and excellence in dental publications. Its members include dentists, dental care professionals, dental journalists, and communicators.

Young Communicator of the Year Award

The BDEWF runs an annual competition for the Young Communicator of the Year. The two prizes (£500 and £250) are awarded, sponsored by the British Dental Industry Association.

Past winners include both dentists and dental journalists and last year saw a record number of entrants for the competition.

If you are under 35 years of age and have published an article/video, or any form of communication between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019, then please do consider putting yourself forward.

For more information on how to apply, get in touch – the deadline for applying is 15 July.

Prizes are presented at the annual BDEWF dinner, which is a great opportunity to network, as well as being recognised by your peers.

New writers' workshop

The Forum holds a writers' workshop every year, for those new to writing and editing and provides ongoing support for these individuals. This day enables delegates to gain a better insight into how to get papers published and the peer review process.

It also gives delegates the opportunity to sharpen skills on critically appraising research, creating effective social media posts and campaigns, along with discussion regarding the pitfalls of plagiarism.

The cost is £40 for BDEWF members, £65 for Non-BDEWF members, £20 for full-time students, and includes lunch and refreshments. The event gives you five hours of CPD

The next workshop will be on 22 October 2019 in London, email us for more information.

The BDEWF has also run symposia for editors, publishers and writers at four of the last six annual meetings of the International Association for Dental Research, and last year we attended the IADR in London, focusingon the subject of Altmetrics.
