​CQC extends DBS checks for new dental practice owners to 12 months

The BDA welcomes the news that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has altered its strict policy of enforcing CQC-countersigned Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) checks to last for only six-months for those buying new practices, and has extended it to 12-months.

We, alongside other providers, argued that the short, six-month lifespan for the check, caused both an extra cost and an unnecessary burden for dental practices.

The CQC says it has changed its position following feedback from providers, but states it will retain the right to request "a six-month DBS certificate should there be any safeguarding concerns"

Chair of the BDA's General Dental Practice Committee, Henrik Overgaard Nielson said:


"We welcome this change as a common-sense move. DBS checks issued for this purpose used to last just six months, which often caused issues for GDPs buying new practices, as it frequently takes longer for the other legal process to be completed. This extension is certainly a step in the right direction and we will continue to fight on unnecessary bureaucracy like this, which affects our dentists adversely."
