Hospital dentists gather at the BDA to discuss the future of the HDS

6 February 2020

BDA Board member Laura Cross and Chair of CCHDS, Peter Dyer

Over 80
hospital dentists from across the UK gathered at the BDA in London yesterday for an update on key issues affecting the Hospital Dental service, and a chance to learn and network.

full day’s CPD programme included lectures on human factors in dentistry, an update on oral medicine for secondary care, developments on hospital doctors pay and contracts, the future of the hospital dental workforce, and the implications of the ‘Getting it right first time for hospital dentistry’ (GIRFT) report.

New BDA Board Member and Consultant/Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Restorative Dentistry, Laura Cross, opened the day with a speech, highlighting her background in hospital dentistry and her desire to ensure the voice of hospital dentists is heard at a national level.

Our popular poster competition for DCTs had over 30 entries and the winners were Manpreet Gakhal, Kunal Patel and Rosemary Whatling for ‘Two-cycle audit: Completion of paediatric medical history forms’ study and the runners up were James Webster, David Landes and Richard Holmes for their ‘Community Needs Assessment within Emergency Dental Walk-in Clinic, Newcastle Dental Hospital’ study.

The competition aims to encourage and recognise younger members of the HDS and to enable a pathway to research and continuing professional development.

Chair of the BDA's Central Committee for Hospital Dentist Services (CCHDS), Peter Dyer said:

"It was great to see such a wide and diverse group of hospital dentists coming together with the aim of getting informed, sharing best practice and experience, and always importantly, continuing to learn."

We know working in the HDS can be highly-pressurised and competitive environment, so we hold this annual event to bring dentists from different specialties, different stages of their careers, and different environments, to share news, help build collaboration, provide important networking opportunities and provide our hospital dentists with the tools and support they need to succeed in their careers.

Laura Cross, BDA Board member said

“I was delighted to be able to speak to our hospital dentists at this event and to hear about the different challenges and opportunities working in the HDS that colleagues across the UK are facing.

“I believe my election to the BDA’s Board, as the first-ever non-GDP, shows the desire from the membership to ensure all fields of practice are represented at a national level, and I intend to ensure your voice is heard. I encourage all dentists to get involved in the BDA, there are so many opportunities and we can help you take your career to the next level.”
