On Friday 17January, the BDA Northern Ireland Branch welcomed it's President for 2020, Paul Brennan, at a ceremony in the beautiful Queen's University Belfast building.
The ceremony commenced with a drinks reception in the Canada Room followed by dinner and speeches in the Great Hall. The evening was attended by colleagues from across all fields of the dental profession in Northern Ireland, and beyond, and friends and family.
Speaking on behalf of the guests was Donncha O'Carolan, Regional lead for GDS and Governance at the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB). Those in attendance on the evening raised nearly £1,300 for the BDA Benevolent Fund.
Paul was presented with his chains of office by the outgoing 2019 Branch President Claudette Christie.
Paul has been in general practice in Strabane for 33 years since qualifying from Queens University Belfast in 1986. Paul then completed a certificate in Restorative Dentistry and an MSc in endodontics at the Eastman. Since then he has lectured both locally, and at the Eastman, and runs a referral endodontic service.
From the early 1990s, Paul has been involved with dental representation. He served as Secretary and then Chair of the Western Area Local Dental Committee (LDC), Deputy Chair of Western Area Dental Advisory, and is currently Chair of the Clinical Audit and Dental Peer Review in General Dental Practice (CAPRAP)
Speaking about the evening and the new Branch programme, Paul said:
"It's a fantastic programme with gifted speakers who will explore topics relevant to you and your practice. It's an honour to be Installed as Branch President and to launch the programme this evening. I love my job and I love being a dentist, there is no other profession like it.
"I really encourage you to join us, and get involved in your Branch, get involved in dental representation, and make sure your profession is the best that it can be".
