Friday 23 April 2021 | Crowne Plaza Felbridge - Gatwick, East Grinstead

With the exponential rise in implant treatment, of all qualities, this is a topic no dentist can shy away from. Implants are becoming an everyday part of dentistry, and while we all know how good they can be as a solution, often the outcomes land on the shoulders of the dentist caring for the patient who was not involved with the implants in any way.

Well planned, placed and completed implants can be simple to maintain, but sadly when a case may have been less well implemented, especially with the ever-growing dental tourism market, patients may sit in your chair asking for help. At this stage we need to consider how to manage these patients.

Learning content and objectives

  • Understand how to approach effective management of the implant patient
  • Review catastrophic failings of some cases that are treated overseas, as well as in this country, and see how these cases can be approached, focusing on long-term solutions
  • Understand why implants start to cause issues after a number of years, and how to reduce these issues by implementing ideal care from the start of the case
  • Learn techniques to simplify planning and treatments in implant dentistry
  • Explore what to consider with loose implant crowns or broken components
  • Know what to do when blood and pus is observed
  • Consider how to manage dental tourism.

Guy Barwell, BDA Southern Counties Branch President, Implant Surgeon and Co-founder of The Implant Centre, Hove

Having trained in the UK, Guy qualified as both a dentist and medical doctor, with a degree in psychology. He trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, gaining distinctions, and was put forward for the University of London Gold Medal (the highest accolade from the college). The focus of his psychology degree was dental anxiety and he utilises this on a daily basis, putting nervous patients at ease with his relaxed chairside manner. With a success rate for implants of over 99% (five-year data), Guy prides himself on his ability to simplify implant dentistry and reassure patients at every stage.

He has mentored over 40 dentists and is an accredited mentor for the Association of Dental Implantology. Other roles include previous Chair of the local section of the BDA and remaining an active member of the committee. He lectures frequently to dentists, helping training in the techniques he has developed.

Guy has a specific interest in management of failures and complications relating to implants placed overseas and at other clinics.

Matthew Rose, Implant Surgeon and Restorative Dentist, The Implant Centre, Hove

Matthew is an accredited specialist in the fields of prosthodontics and oral surgery, who is both a Fellow (FDS) and a Member (MRD) of the Royal College of Surgeons. He graduated from Guy’s Hospital (BDS), with distinction, in 1992 and served as a House Officer in Oral Medicine and Immunology at the same hospital. Two and a half years were then spent at various oral surgery departments around the South East, honing his diagnostic and surgical skills.

From 1996 to 1999, Matthew worked in both NHS and private general dental practice. Following his time in practice, he embarked on a three-year Prosthodontic Masters postgraduate programme at the Eastman Dental Institute (MClinDent Pros). It was while studying there that his enthusiasm for the management of prosthodontic problems was born, along with an appreciation of how beneficial dental implant treatment could be to his patients. The planning and placement of dental implants played a large role in this three-year training programme.

In 2002, Matthew completed his postgraduate degree with distinction and then spent four years at a practice in the London, during which  he was also a part-time clinical supervisor in the prosthodontic department of the Eastman Dental Institute. In 2007, Matthew joined The Implant Centre.
