Job planning, appraisal and pay progression

This advice provides key information about job planning and appraisal and how these inform incremental pay progression for dentists working in the Community Dental Services (CDS) and Public Dental Service in Scotland.

Overview

Appraisals and job planning are designed to support your professional development, ensure fair recognition of your work, and help align your role with the needs of the service. They are a chance for you to discuss anything you are not satisfied with and make sure you are going in the right direction in order to achieve your professional goals. This page outlines what you should expect, from protected preparation time and transparent processes to access to training and resources.

On this page you will learn more about the job planning process, what it involves and good practice in designing a job plan. We also detail what information should be included in a job plan. This plan should be reviewed in the future so it is important to get it right and make it achievable, and check that both parties are clear on what it entails.

We also cover appraisals, and how to approach them to best address developmental needs and work towards enhanced performance and wellbeing. You can learn more about how to prepare for your upcoming appraisal and look back constructively on previous ones in terms of training and competencies. Of course, you may disagree with your manager on issues such as competency and performance, and for these situations we detail how the mediation and appeal process works.

The guidance covers pay progression and what factors it depends on. There is an extended competency point for England and Wales.

You can also learn more about funding for training and what you are legally entitled to within this, depending on the nation you practise in. As well as this, we detail your employer’s obligations regarding training and funding.
