Managing organisational change in your dental practice

Guidance for practice owners on planning, managing and embedding organisational change effectively within a dental practice.

Overview

Implementing a new business plan, restructuring your dental practice, or introducing any form of operational change affecting people requires a structured, thoughtful approach to ensure the transition is effective and sustainable. Once you have identified a change, the next step is moving it into action. Setting clear, realistic deadlines, along with milestones for larger or more complex activities, allows you to track progress.

Delegation is an essential part of implementation. You may not be able to complete every task yourself, so assigning responsibilities to the right team members is essential. For delegation to be successful, individuals must understand the strategy (or bigger picture), what is required of them, the support available, and the timescales involved.

A wellthoughtout change management strategy is vital to implementing any plan effectively. People naturally resist change, especially when they do not understand why it is happening or how it will affect them. Successful change management involves engaging those affected, giving them opportunities to ask questions, and clearly explaining the reasons for change. Helping people see the benefits, for the practice and for them personally, is essential to secure their buyin and reduce anxiety, uncertainty, or obstructive behaviour.

Significant change often triggers an emotional response. It is common for individuals to move through stages such as shock, denial, frustration, or despondency before reaching acceptance. They may not necessarily like the change, but with clear communication, reassurance, and involvement in the process, they are far more likely to understand it and work with it. Leading and supporting your team through these stages is crucial to achieving longterm, positive outcomes.

This advice supports you in planning, managing, and evaluating organisational change within your dental practice. It explains the legal considerations, common barriers, recognised change models, and practical steps that can help you to ensure that change is introduced smoothly and sustainably.
