Early detection of oral cancer  

Session synopsis

This session will start by giving an overview of the impact that oral cancer has on the UK population and affected individuals. Early detection is a significant factor in improving outcomes for oral cancer patients and the vital role of the primary dental team will be explored. Tips will be given on history and examination, how to access secondary care services effectively and how to communicate concerns and promote prevention with patients.

About the speaker

Simon Whitley, Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Barts and the Royal London Hospitals; and Lead Clinician and Chair, Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Team, North East London NHS

Simon Whitley is an Oral and Maxillofacial Consultant specialising in the diagnosis and surgical management of oropharyngeal, salivary and head and neck skin cancers. He trained in medicine and dentistry at Newcastle University and went on to complete surgical and specialist training in the Northeast and Manchester. He is the Lead Clinician for Bart's Health Head and Neck Multidisiplinary Team and is the Head and Neck Pathway Director for London Cancer Integrated Cancer System which looks after the cancer care of over 3.5 million Londoners.
