This event is only open to BDA members who are part of the Armed Forces including reservists and retired members*

What to expect

The Armed Forces Group Annual Study Day will take place at the BDA on Thursday 4 July 2024.

All BDA Armed Forces Group members are invited to attended, including retired members and those members of the BDA currently employed as a CDP on a MOD Contract.

This annual event is a great opportunity to network with your colleagues.

*Retired BDA Armed Forces Group members are those who have retired from Defence Primary Healthcare (Dental) having accumulated at least 20 years of service, either in uniform and/or as a Civilian Dental Practitioner.

Meet the speaker

Ian Dunn Specialist in Periodontics

Ian qualified from Leeds in 1998 and went into general practice in the North West. In 2001 he was awarded Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practice. In 2002 he joined the teaching staff at Liverpool Dental Hospital in the Periodontology Department where he became the Undergraduate Teaching Lead in Periodontics and a Senior Clinical Teacher in Periodontics, a role he held for 5 years until leaving that position in 2018. In 2010 he completed his MSc in Periodontology and in 2013 he was admitted to the GDC Specialist List in Periodontics. In 2023 Ian was invited to become a Fellow of the College or General Dentistry.

Ian spends three days a week in private practice in Liverpool of England where he takes referrals for all aspects of Periodontology. He serves on the Council of the British Society of Periodontology as their as Honorary Treasurer. In 2014 he was also elected to the BSP Faculty and is on the editorial board of Dental Update.

Ian teaches for the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons and runs their short course in Periodontics and has recently been appointed Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Periodontics at UCLAN where he helps teaching on the post grad programme.

Session 1 - Perio in the Military – Specific challenges

Aim:

During this lecture we will explore some of the unique challenges that are faced managing a chronic oral condition in a workforce who are constantly being moved around the world. We will look at the potential medico-legal implications and measures that can be taken to minimise any exposure for the military. We will look at team working and skill mix and discuss the power or oral hygiene.

Learning Objectives:

Following this lecture attendees will:

Identify risks of managing periodontal patients in a transient patient base
Be able to reduce the risk of potential future claims from personnel
Understand the value of skill mix and utilising the whole dental team in the management of the periodontal patient
Understand the power or oral hygiene.

Session 2 - How to perform non-surgical therapy effectively

Aim:

During this presentation we will look to explore what effective non-surgical therapy encompasses, referencing the latest clinical guidelines from the recent S3 Perio workshops by the European Federation of Periodontology. We will look at rapid protocols for periodontal management and remind the audience about the defined clinical endpoints of therapy.

Learning Objectives:

Following this lecture attendees will:

Be up to date with current thinking in non-surgical management of periodontal disease
Be able to develop protocols for managing periodontal disease in an efficient manner
Understand the endpoints of treatment.

Session 3 - Adjuncts to periodontal treatment and implant monitoring and maintenance

Aim:

This lecture will be split into two sections.

In the first half of the lecture we will look at where adjuncts have a place in the management of periodontal disease, again referencing the recent S3 Treatment guidelines. We will let look to discuss the role of the general dentist or hygienist in the management and maintenance of dental implants. Whilst the Military do not necessarily place dental implants, increased personnel will present with dental implants done outside of the Military and patients will expect the dentists and hygienist to examine and care for their oral health, including dental implants.

Learning Objectives:

Following this lecture attendees will:

Be up to date with regards to the use of adjuncts in the management of periodontal disease
Understand how to examine a dental implant and the relevant data capture specific to dental implants
Be able to diagnose basic peri-implant conditions
Be family with implant maintenance protocols.
