What to expect

This event will discuss the current evidence linking periodontitis with systemic diseases and vitamin deficiencies, explore their clinical significance, and provide practical tips for holistic patient management. The lecture will support general dental practitioners in applying evidence-based guidelines and integrating systemic health considerations into everyday periodontal care.

Learning objectives

  • Describe the evidence for the link between periodontitis and systemic diseases

  • Discuss the biological mechanisms for the association between periodontitis and systemic diseases 

  • Discuss the relationship between periodontitis and vitamin deficiencies

  • Revisit periodontal treatment guidelines when caring for patients with associated systemic diseases

  • Describe the physical, psychological and social impacts associated with periodontal diseases as well as the economic impact and burden of disease

  • Consider the practical implications for the general dentists when treating patients in a holistic way

  • Highlight the available resources from national and international guidelines available to the general dental practitioners.

Meet the speaker

Ana GambôaConsultant Senior Lecturer in Periodontology, University of Bristol

Since 2019, Dr Ana Gambôa has held the position of Consultant Senior Lecturer in Periodontology at the University of Bristol and Bristol Dental Hospital. She plays a pivotal role in postgraduate and undergraduate education as the co-lead and founder of the MSc in Periodontology and subject lead for undergraduate teaching in the discipline.

Clinically, Dr Gambôa maintains a busy practice. In addition to training restorative and mono-specialty trainees at Bristol Dental Hospital and leading the undergraduate teaching in periodontology, she works as a specialist periodontist in two private clinics, delivering advanced periodontal care.
