What to expect 

The aim of this lecture is to provide general dental practitioners with a practical overview
of clear aligner therapy. Delegates will gain the knowledge and clinical insight required to
select suitable cases, apply practical tips for safe and effective treatment, recognise
common pitfalls, and make informed decisions about when to treat in practice or refer to a
specialist. Emphasis is placed on patient safety, predictable outcomes, and effective
communication with patients.

Learning objectives

  • Identify cases suitable for clear aligner treatment in general dental practice
  • Recognise cases that require referral to a specialist due to complexity, periodontal concerns, or risk of iatrogenic harm
  • Describe the key principles of aligner biomechanics and factors affecting treatment predictability
  • Apply practical strategies to optimise treatment outcomes and avoid common clinical pitfalls
  • Explain clear aligner treatment options, risks, and limitations effectively to patients to support informed consent.

Meet the speaker

Dr Devesh Shelat Specialist Orthodontist

Dev is a Specialist Orthodontist with over 10 years of experience in tooth alignment and smile design. He graduated from the University of Manchester in 2011 and completed his specialist orthodontic training at Newcastle University in 2019, where he also earned an MSc in Orthodontics with Distinction.

Between graduating and specialising in Orthodontics, Dev gained extensive postgraduate training and hospital experience across the UK, including Birmingham and Newcastle Dental Hospitals, as well as Birmingham Children’s Hospital. His background spans multiple dental specialties, including paediatric dentistry, community dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. This breadth of experience informs his holistic and patient-focused approach to orthodontic care.

Dev is an active member of the British Orthodontic Society, the British Lingual Orthodontic Society, and the European Aligner Society. He currently practises in Knutsford in Cheshire, providing expert care for children, adolescents, and adults, with a focus on both fixed / lingual appliances and clear aligner therapy.
