What to expect 

This session will provide an evidence-based update on contemporary endodontic diagnosis and treatment, clarifying current best practices in pulp testing, diagnosis and treatment planning. It will explore the appropriate and ethical use of CBCT in endodontics and review modern instrumentation, irrigation, activation, and obturation techniques, including the role of bioceramic materials. Post-endodontic restoration strategies aimed at optimising long-term outcomes will also be discussed, with the overall goal of increasing delegates’ confidence in delivering predictable, high-quality endodontic care.

Learning objectives

• Diagnosis and testing - Describe the limitations and appropriate use of special tests in endodontics, differentiate between pulpal and periapical diagnoses using contemporary terminology, and explain the indications and benefits of CBCT to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

• Treatment protocol - Outline a predictable, step-by-step protocol for primary root canal treatment that incorporates minimally invasive access cavity design, contemporary approaches to glide path preparation and canal shaping, and strategies to recognise and minimise common procedural errors.

• Irrigation and activation - Compare the roles of commonly used irrigants such as sodium hypochlorite and EDTA, and explain the benefits and limitations of different activation techniques, including manual, sonic, and ultrasonic methods.

• Obturation and bioceramics - Compare cold lateral compaction, warm vertical compaction, and single-cone obturation techniques, discuss current evidence on single-cone approaches using bioceramic sealers, and recognise the key factors that influence the long-term seal and treatment outcome.

• Post-endodontic restoration - Explain the importance of achieving a reliable coronal seal for long-term success, identify when cuspal coverage is indicated, and understand the ferrule effect and other structural considerations relevant to post placement.

Meet the speaker

Dr Rob Jacobs is a Registered Specialist in Endodontics and the founder of Jacobs  Endodontics, a referral-based endodontic practice in Manchester dedicated to the management of complex root canal problems.

Rob qualified with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Newcastle University in 2012 before working in general dental practice. He subsequently completed specialist training in Endodontics at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 2018 following a three-year fulltime programme that included advanced clinical training and a doctorate-level research project. His research focused on patient-reported outcomes following endodontic treatment, reflecting a strong interest in linking technical quality with patient experience and long-term success.

His clinical work is centred on the diagnosis and treatment of complex endodontic disease, including retreatment, management of missed anatomy, procedural complications, and the use of CBCT to support diagnosis and treatment planning.

Rob has a particular interest in predictable endodontic outcomes, contemporary instrumentation and irrigation protocols, and the practical integration of evidence-based techniques into everyday specialist practice. He works closely with referring dentists to support decision-making and optimise patient care.
