What to expect

The aim of this session is to provide delegates with an increased awareness of core legal and ethical obligations relevant to patients who have had treatment abroad or are refusing treatment.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the legal foundations of the duty of care owed by dentists to patients
  • Explain the GDC Standards regarding refusal of care
  • Identify legal and ethical requirements for patient confidentiality and data protection.
  • Recognise common risks associated with refusing treatment, specifically when the patient has had treatment abroad
  • Consider how to deal with concerns and apply strategies to mitigate these risks.
  • Demonstrate improved confidence in handling refusal of care scenarios, through real life case examples.

Meet the speaker

Siobhan Walsh Senior Adviser, Taylor Defence Services

Siobhan joined TDS in April 2022 as a member of the in-house legal team and became Senior Adviser
in October 2024. A Solicitor, Siobhan has over a decade of experience defending Dentists and Medics,
both for an Indemnifier and panel firm of Solicitors. She is therefore accustomed to providing risk
management advice at every stage of a matter, from initial complaint to formally defending a claim.
Family ties have provided a background of knowledge of dentistry, meaning that she is sensitive to
the specific challenges faced by Dentists.
In addition to practice, Siobhan has lectured in Law at multiple Universities for several years and holds
Visiting Lecturer positions at several institutions.
