What to expect

This half day hands-on workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to perform microsuturing techniques in surgical dentistry, enabling atraumatic soft tissue management, improved wound closure, and enhanced postoperative healing outcomes.

Learning objectives

Describe the principles of wound healing and the rationale for microsurgical approaches in dentistry
Identify and select appropriate microsurgical instruments, needles, and suture materials for different clinical applications
Demonstrate correct ergonomic positioning and the use of magnification during surgical procedures
Apply atraumatic soft tissue handling techniques to minimise tissue trauma
Perform common micro suturing techniques, including simple interrupted, mattress, and continuous sutures
Achieve tension-free wound closure and optimal tissue adaptation in simulated surgical scenarios
Implement appropriate infection prevention and control measures during surgical procedures
Evaluate the clinical advantages of micro suturing techniques and incorporate these principles into everyday surgical dental practice.

Peter Dyer

Senior Clinical Lecturer, Course Lead MSc Oral Surgery

Peter is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with a special interest in facial trauma, orthognathic surgery and oral medicine. He lectures on Oral Diseases and Oral Surgery to undergraduates and postgraduates. He is also a Responsible Officer overseeing the appraisal and revalidation of doctors in his NHS Trust. He was Medical Director at the Trust and managed the hospital's clinical response to the Grayrigg train derailment in 2007 and the Swine Flu Pandemic in 2009. He has an interest in the history of medicine and dentistry and recently appeared on Radio 4's, "The Origin of Stuff, History of the Toothbrush". He co-curated an exhibition at the British Dental Association in London (2019) about "Eric Cooper, Colditz Dentist". Peter is a co-editor of The Handbook of Immediate Care and has published chapters on facial trauma in eight textbooks.

Flavio Pisani

Senior Clinical Lecturer, Course Lead MSc Periodontology

Flavio is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Periodontology at University of Lancashire/Honorary Consultant in Periodontology at University Hospital Morecambe Bay Trust/Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

He holds a Specialist degree in Oral Surgery, in Periodontics, a MSc in Implant Dentistry and a PhD in Dentistry.

He leads the DClinDent in Periodontology, the Postgraduate MSc Programme in Clinical Periodontology and the FT MSc in Implantology.

His expertise relates to the surgical aspect of Periodontology, with particular regards to Periodontal Regeneration and Periodontal Plastic Surgery/Soft tissue manipulation around teeth and Implants.

Kate Taylor

Chair in Oral Surgery, Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery, School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Central Lancashire

Kate teaches all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate oral surgery and oral diseases. Kate completed her academic oral and maxillofacial surgery (AACOMS) in the Yorkshire region in 2013 and has expertise in all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery. She has a special interest in managing anxious patients and in the management of medical emergencies in dental practice. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Kate is a member of the Teaching sub-committee of ABAOMS and is President of the Association of Academic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and has been co-author of a number of leading publications in undergraduate oral surgery education. She is reviewer for the Journal of Oral Surgery and has published extensively on medical emergency management.

Kate was awarded the Lady Estelle Wolfson Fellowship (RCS England) and performs a number of college roles. She is an examiner for Membership in Oral Surgery, ISFE Oral Surgery and MOMS (membership in oral and maxillofacial surgery).

Anna Vincent

Anna is a Specialty Doctor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She qualified from Bristol University in 2005. Following the completion of SHO posts in Bristol and London, she began working in Cumbria. During this time, she gained invaluable experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, attained the Diploma in Conscious Sedation from Newcastle University, and fell in love with the fells and lakes of the North.

In 2017, Anna left her full-time hospital position to broaden her scope of practice, working across a variety of settings including special care, emergency and general dentistry. Her current working week is an eclectic mix of Tier 2 oral surgery, private oral surgery, her role as a Specialty Doctor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for Morecambe Bay, and clinical teaching in oral surgery at the University of Lancashire.

Anna particularly enjoys sharing her clinical experience and practical knowledge with colleagues and students, and is passionate about making oral surgery accessible, relevant and applicable to everyday clinical practice.
