What to expect

With expert-led sessions and opportunities to connect with colleagues, this event offers practical insights and fresh perspectives for the whole dental team.

Joana Monteiro will provide an overview of the assessment and management of traumatic dental injuries in children, including diagnosis, emergency management, potential complications, and principles of long-term care and tooth replacement following trauma.

Nishma Sharma will highlight the work of the DDAG, why Equality, equity, diversity and inclusivity is important, why further awareness is needed and how a biased, prejudiced society will impact on us as a profession.

Damien Walmsley will show how items from the British Dental Museum reveal the history and development of dentistry. Through images and stories, the lecture will demonstrate how instruments, materials and everyday objects illustrate changes in dental practice and professional life over time.

Learning objectives

  • Understand how to assess and manage traumatic dental injuries, recognise complications and referral needs, and plan appropriate long‑term treatment
  • Develop awareness of inequalities and barriers in dentistry, communicate confidently about discrimination and inclusivity, and apply these principles across personal, social and professional contexts
  • Recognise selected historical dental objects, understand their purpose and historical context, and appreciate how museum collections and photography can be used to interpret and communicate the development of dentistry.

Managing dental trauma in children: from emergency care to long-term outcomes

Aim
To provide an overview of the assessment and management of traumatic dental injuries in children, including diagnosis, emergency management, potential complications, and principles of long-term care and tooth replacement following trauma.

  • Outline principles of emergency management and appropriate follow-up care
  • Identify potential complications and referral pathways
  • Discuss long-term management and tooth replacement options following trauma

Learning content

This session will provide an overview of traumatic dental injuries in children. It will cover structured clinical and radiographic assessment and management of injuries affecting the primary and permanent dentitions. Complications, long-term sequelae and tooth replacement options will be discussed, with clinical case discussions illustrating decision-making and encouraging interaction.

EDI in dentistry: It’s not black or white

Aim

The intention of this presentation is to highlight the work of the DDAG, why Equality, equity, diversity and inclusivity is important, why further awareness is needed and how a biased, prejudiced society will impact on us as a profession.

  • Identify areas of inequality in dentistry and explore potential barriers to access
  • Feel more confident discussing discrimination and inclusivity, reducing the awkwardness these conversations can create
  • Apply these insights in daily life - personally, socially and professionally.

Every picture tells a story

Aim

To learn how items from the British Dental Museum reveal the history and development of dentistry. Through images and stories, the lecture will demonstrate how instruments, materials and everyday objects illustrate changes in dental practice and professional life over time.

Learning objectives

  • Recognise selected historical dental objects and understand their purpose and historical context
  • Appreciate how museum collections and photography can be used to interpret and communicate the development of dentistry.

Learning content

This lecture will show items from the British Dental Museum using photographs taken before the collection was placed in storage. The lecture presents a range of instruments, materials and other objects and will explain how they were used, or even still used, in everyday dental practice. At the end there will be a fun quiz to test the audience’s knowledge of dentistry through the ages.
